Dates revealed for Ramadan 2023

The holy month, Ramadan 2023 in the United Arab Emirates is expected to begin on Thursday, 23 March. The 30 day fast will end on the evening of Friday, 21 April, with the Eid-Al-Fitr, end of Ramadan, falling on the same day.

 

The UAE Cabinet recently released the official holiday dates of the year, which included the dates for Ramadan, the most awaited time of the year.

Check the list below for the holiday dates:

  • New Year’s Day –  January 1
  • Eid al Fitr – April 20, 21, 22 and 23
  • Arafat Day – June 27
  • Eid al Adha – June 28, 29, 30
  • Islamic New Year –  July 19
  • The Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) birthday –  September 27
  • Commemoration Day – December 1
  • National Day – December 2, 3

The exact date of Ramadan is observed by religious scholars based on astronomical charts.

The UAE followed the official announcement made by the moon sighting committee in Makkah regarding this. Makkah is considered to be the holiest city in Islam, it being the birthplace of Prophet Mohammad.

Ramadan begins at the first appearance of the crescent moon and lasts 29 or 30 days like other months depending on the next crescent moon.

The origin of word Ramadan is from the Arabic word ramida or ar-ramad which means scorching or dryness.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. The Islamic calendar has 354 days. It is the month of charity, blessings and holiness. It is the holiest month of the year because it was the month in which the holy Quran was revealed to Prophet Mohammad on the night of Laylat-Al-Qadr also known as the Night of power which is considered to be the holiest night of the year, one of the last ten nights of Ramadan. Ramadan is considered as one of the five pillars of Islam. The people living in Dubai consider it the most important part of their life and wait for it with great anticipation.

During Ramadan, Muslims are required to abstain from eating, drinking, smoking or any kind of foul activities for 30 days, from dawn to dusk which sums up to 14 hours a day. Children are not allowed to fast during Ramadan until they have reached the age of puberty, the pregnant women are also not allowed to fast.

They are only allowed to eat before the dawn, before the beginning of fast which is called Suhoor and after the dusk, breaking their fast which is called Iftar.

In the UAE, there are many events and charities organized to celebrate the Ramadan period. The celebration is seen all around the country. The food for Suhoor is donated all over the country and it is seen as common practice. The donation events are also organized.

During Ramadan, people spend their time praying, doing charity, purifying their body and soul. Muslim countries reduce work hours for the employees, giving them additional time to pray, which is normally from 9am to 2 pm in private companies.
